Introduction
Janine Ferreira is known as an emotionally curious composer with a deep connection to soundscapes that brings her music to a new dimension of listening. Her ambient piano compositions are rich in exploring the human experience, and combined with her intuitive blend of electronic sounds and manipulated recorded sounds of the environment, they are nothing short of captivating. Described as ‘reflective and touching” and “deeply moving”, as well as “exciting and uplifting”, Janine’s compositions tackle themes of identity, memory, love along with trauma and loss. The music is unique and satisfying and creates a visual backdrop that can be used as an accompaniment or main theme to film, dance choreography, or animation.
Background
The artist’s composition journey started at a very young age while living on Gambier Island BC, playing in the forest and listening to her mother’s New Wave vinyl collections. This combination of synthesizer music and natural sounds influenced her own unique style of composition that seeks to capture the possibilities of nature-technology collaborations. The composer began playing piano in childhood and quickly navigated her way through classical training while writing her own music along the way. Janine has studied music composition with composers David Gordon Duke, David MacIntyre and Arne Eigenfeldt, who influenced her melodic style and experimental approach to sound design. Janine can be found wandering the city or hiking with her Zoom mic, recording the environment and capturing sound ideas for her compositions. She continues to be influenced by the natural sounds of growing up on the WestCoast of British Columbia, and by composers Enya, Chile Gonzales, Jazz pianist Kieth Jarret, and film composer Hildur Guðnadóttir to name a few.
